How to shuck corn before grilling?
To shuck corn kernels before grilling, you’ll need sharp kitchen shears, tongs or a shuck-off board. You don’t want to use a knife or an electric shaver as the sharp blades can damage the kernels and make them less tender. If you don’t have these tools, you can usually rent them from a kitchen store.
If you want to shuck the kernels off the cobs before cooking, you can do it in two ways: husk it and then shuck it, or snap the kernels off the cob while it’s still raw. We’ll cover the husk-on-the-cob method first. But before we do, let’s talk about a tool you might not have known exists: a shucker.

The husks of the corn ears should be silky and dry. If they’re wet, they’ll tear apart when you try to remove them from the kernels. To check for dry husks, rub the kernels. If they feel smooth and feel like sandpaper, the husks are dry.
If the kernels feel moist, leave the husks on the ears longer. However, the kernels will turn into mush if they dry out too much. Once you’ve husked the ears, you need to remove the kernels and the silks. To do this, hold the ear of corn in one hand and insert the shucker into it an inch or two.
Now, move the shucker around back and forth to crack the kernels off the cob. The kernels will start to fall into your other hand. Continue to do this until you have removed all of the kernels.

To shuck the corn kernels before smoking them, place the ears of corn in a large pot of boiling water for about 20 seconds. The kernels will loosen from the cob, and you should be able to easily pull off the husks. Let the kernels cool completely before placing them on the grill.
For this method, cut the kernels from the cobs. Then, spread the kernels in a baking dish. Pour the milk over the kernels. Let the kernels soak for about 20 minutes. Afterward, drain the kernels in a colander.

Shucking is the process of removing the kernels from the husk. If you’re looking for a quick way to do this, use a sharp knife and cut the kernels away from the cob. Just be sure to cut all the way through the kernels and down to the end of the cob so you can remove the kernels once you’ve husked them.
Once the husks are dry and are no longer in danger of bursting open, husk the ears and remove the silks. If you’re using fresh corn, you don’t need to remove the silks. Use your fingers to strip the kernels from the cob (if using frozen corn, you can skip this step).
How to shuck corn before grilling corn?
If you want to shuck your corn the night before you plan to grill it, you can do so. Just be sure to place the shucked ears in a bowl or jar with a lid to keep them from drying out. If you don’t want to do the shucking the night before, you can still shuck the corn the morning of your outdoor gathering.
Just make sure to do it as soon as the kernels start to dry out and become hard. When you shuck corn in the husk, the kernels naturally stay attached. To shuck “bare kernels” (also called corn on the cob), first husk the ears. Then, cut the kernels off the cob with a sharp knife.
If you don’t have a husk or the husking process is overly difficult, purchase husked ears at your local farmers’ market or grocery store.
