What does your alternator do?
Your modern vehicle is more than likely equipped with an alternator That’s right, the same unit that charges your battery also generates electricity to power your car’s electrical systems. It is designed to run continuously, 24 hours a day, to keep your car’s electrical system charged and all your accessories running.
Your vehicle’s battery is connected to your car’s electrical system through a charging system called an alternator. When the engine is running, the alternator produces a small amount of electricity to charge the battery.
Your car’s electrical system uses the electricity stored in the battery to function properly. With a weak or drained battery, your car may not be able to start or function properly.
What does my alternator belt do?
Your belt drives the alternator. If it fails, your car will not start. If your belt is stretched or damaged it will cause the belt to slip off your pulleys, effectively stopping your car’s charging. If your belt squeaks, it may also indicate your belt is failing.
